Workshops

Every year internationally acclaimed husband and wife photographer/authors Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman lead sold-out photography workshops in Italy, Maine and Washington DC . They invite you to join them for low-key, hands-on instruction in some of the world’s most beautiful settings.

UMBRIA: Join Frank for a relaxed week of photo instruction, fine wining and dining and fascinating exploration in Umbria’s scenic hill towns in mid-October—arguably the best time of the year to photograph in what many call “Tuscany without the tourists.”

This is an intimate, personal workshop—only seven participants—based in an elegant, family-owned, hotel in the ancient Umbrian hill town of Todi. Go to places the average tourist never sees. Package includes welcome dinner, all breakfasts, personal instruction, formal critiques, lavish daily wine and cicchetti happy hour at the hotel, guided excursions throughout the region via private van and much more.

Subject to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions on international travel and rules for mandatory quarantine…

MAINE: Their popular summertime workshops are in Lubec, Maine—the easternmost point in the US that is featured prominently in Frank’s award-winning book Down East Maine/ A World Apart. Week-long classes in July and August are conducted in partnership with the famed SummerKeys music workshops. Single-digit class size assures individual attention during a week that will include location and landscape photography, nighttime shooting and informal portraiture.

WASHINGTON: In the DC metro area, Frank Van Riper is a senior faculty member of PhotoWorks at Glen Echo Park, MD, where he teaches documentary photography, location lighting and night shooting.
